Diese außergewöhnliche Jazz-LP präsentiert die Neuauflage eines legendären musikalischen TV-Ereignisses: „The Sound of Jazz“, eine einmalige Jam-Session mit 32 herausragenden Jazzmusikern der Swing-Ära. Am 8. Dezember 1957 wurde das einstündige Programm live aus dem CBS Studio 58 in New York City landesweit ausgestrahlt und gilt bis heute als bedeutendes Dokument der Jazzgeschichte.
Unter der Moderation des renommierten TV-Kritikers John Crosby und der Produktion von Robert Herridge vereinte die Sendung einige der größten Namen des Jazz. Zu den musikalischen Beratern zählten die bekannten Jazzkritiker Nat Hentoff und Whitney Balliett.
Ein beeindruckendes Staraufgebot der Jazzgeschichte: Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones und Coleman Hawkins treffen auf jüngere Jazzgrößen wie Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk und Jimmy Giuffre. Für das Remastering verwendete Ryan Smith von Sterling Sound das originale Dreispur-Masterband, das Sony/BMG in seinen Archiven wiederentdeckt hatte und das vermutlich mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte ungespielt geblieben war. Die aufwendig restaurierte Aufnahme lässt dieses historische Jazzereignis in neuem Klang erstrahlen.
Columbia Records veröffentlichte das Album erstmals 1958. Die LP dokumentiert dabei eine Probe, die der legendären Fernsehsendung vorausging. Das hochwertige Klappcover (Gatefold) enthält informative Liner Notes von Eric Larrabee und rundet diese besondere Veröffentlichung ab.
