Installation and adjustment service for cartridges and tonearms

In our sound machine, we distinguish between two adjustment classes:

- Standard adjustment
- Advanced adjustment

Standard adjustment

Standard adjustment is included when purchasing a new or used system from us on site in Volmarstein .

Here, we meticulously adjust the following aspects for your pickup:

- Circulation
- Overhang
- Mistracking angle (according to Baerwald, Löfgren or Stevenson)
- Azimuth and VTA (parallelism of the cartridge body to the platter surface)

A classic adjustment, the kind most experienced analog enthusiasts would perform at home.

Advanced Adjustment

The Extended Adjustment for Phono Pickups is a method developed over many years by Florian Ernst.
A process by which your cartridge, tonearm, and turntable combination is perfectly aligned . We are happy to offer this bookable service when you purchase components from us or for your existing turntable, which you can bring to us in Vollmarstein.
External adjustment at your home is also possible ; please request a personalized quote.

The following aspects are adjusted and measured beyond the standard adjustment (including with Dr. Feickert Adjust+ Pro software):

- Azimut
No two pickups are alike due to the high degree of handcraftsmanship involved in their manufacture. Therefore, pickups typically exhibit an azimuth variation of ±2 degrees. This means that even with visually correct alignment, the pickup generator is far from perfectly positioned.
This ensures that the channel crosstalk and channel level are not the same between the left and right channels.

A correctly measured and adjusted azimuth brings both channels as close as possible to each other in terms of channel crosstalk and channel level, resulting in a better soundstage representation.

- Distortions
Every phono cartridge generates some degree of distortion when tracking the grooves on a record. The trick is to minimize this distortion during setup and to ensure that the distortion is as identical as possible on both channels.
These distortions can be measured very accurately and interpreted accordingly.

- vertical tracking angle (VTA)
The vertical tracking angle is the angle at which the stylus of the cartridge enters the record groove. The back of the diamond should be at an almost 90-degree angle to the record surface.
Without tools, this is almost impossible to see and assess. We use a high-resolution camera with a macro lens to capture and perfectly adjust the VTA.

Evaluation of your used cartridge

Unfortunately, phono cartridges are consumable items and don't last forever. The stylus, in particular, wears out over time, but the generator or coil winding can also cause problems.

Therefore, after some time it may be worthwhile to have your pickup checked by a professional.
Primarily, it's a way to ensure that the cartridge still meets its factory specifications. A check can also be beneficial if you plan to offer your cartridge on the used market and want to prove that it's in good condition.

The following criteria are checked and recorded:

- Output voltage per channel
- Channel deviation
- Channel crosstalk per channel
- Sampling capability
- Frequency response
- Condition of the stylus with pictures
- Condition of the damping rubber
- Distortion at 1kHz

The following can be booked as an optional extra:

- Precise measurement and logging of the azimuth with installation instructions for perfect installation by yourself at your home

Price for the evaluation: €125 (incl. 19% VAT)
Price for surveying and logging Azimuth (including spirit level for adjustment): €125 (incl. 19% VAT)
