We think

We think the Soulnote M-3 monoblock is a statement in terms of performance and musicality. This amplifier demonstrates just how much substance a high-end monoblock can contain – it combines raw power with subtle timing without compromise. Those who value control, dynamics, and a vibrant sound will find the M-3 to be a device that not only measures but, above all, lets you hear it. Not just a powerhouse, but a musical companion for life.

Product presentation

The Soulnote M-3 is a Series 3 monoblock power amplifier that must be used exclusively as a single channel – two units are required for stereo. The cabinet is massive, with external dimensions of approximately 340 × 251 × 512 millimeters and a weight of approximately 31 kilograms per unit. Each monoblock has a single push-pull output stage, designed with a four-stage Darlington structure, and uses industrial-grade “can-type” power transistors. The M-3 offers an output power of 160 watts into 4 ohms , combined with a very wide frequency response of 2 Hz to 200 kHz (±1 dB) . It has a sensitivity / input voltage of 1 volt at 25 kΩ input impedance and a gain of 22 dB . The power supply is powerful and of high quality – the power transformer, filtering, and rectification are constructed to ensure stability and quality even under heavy loads.

Special features

What makes the M-3 special:

Non-Negative Feedback Circuit (Type-R) : the voltage amplification stages deliberately do without negative feedback to make the sound more direct and clearer.

Four-stage Darlington cascade design with can-type power transistors: ensures high current performance and control, especially with demanding loads.

Copper busbars & copper heatsinks : The heatsink also acts as a busbar, which reduces long conduction paths and thus parasitic effects.

Mechanically complex decoupling : The housing, transformers, connectors and components are not rigidly fixed, but are mounted decoupled, often with spikes and separate containers to minimize vibrations and unwanted resonances.

Powerful power supply and high-quality components in rectification and filtering – specially selected high-impedance, low-capacitance film capacitors and silicon carbide (SiC) diodes in some versions.

Technology & Materials

Inside the M-3, you'll find materials and design choices you'd expect only in the highest-end amplifiers. The power transistors in metal housings (TO-3 or "can type") offer robust mechanical mounting and optimal heat dissipation. The Darlington output ensures high current reserves and stability even at low impedances. The layout minimizes signal paths, and the use of copper busbars reduces resistance and inductive losses. The filter stages and rectifiers are dimensioned to handle both power requirements and fast pulses. Each monoblock is tuned for power and control without compromising sonic naturalness.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

The Soulnote M-3 is handcrafted in Japan with a high level of vertical integration. The choice of materials, dimensions, and components are designed for durability: solid heat sinks, sturdy terminal fittings, high-quality relays, and precise rectifier components. The weight and construction contribute to the device's thermal and mechanical stability, even during long listening sessions. Furthermore, spare parts supply and service are part of Soulnote's philosophy – the M-3 is not a quickly replaceable consumer device, but an investment.

Test reports / press reviews

A German-language expert review is not yet available. However, international reviews and forum feedback provide valuable insights:

One review states: "The acoustic experience with the M-3 is electrifying: The transitions between quiet and loud playing are clean, bass attacks come in quickly without rumbling, and the soundstage extends deep behind the speakers. Voices and instruments gain physicality."

Another review praises: "The M-3 delivers impressive control, especially with complex orchestral and chamber music recordings. It manages to bring out details without coming across as overly analytical—rather, everything comes across as balanced and vibrant."

Background / History / Development

Soulnote was founded to create high-end components that are both technically sophisticated and musically immediate. The Series-3 embodies this philosophy particularly consistently. The M-3 builds on previous devices, refining the power supply, mechanical decoupling, and layout. The designer emphasized simple signal paths, high power delivery, mechanical stability, and component selection, as found in names like TO-3 packages and high-quality copper parts—all with a focus on sound over mere numbers.

Basic knowledge

A few key technical points to help you better understand the M-3 :

Monoblock power amplifier means that each channel has its own amplifier unit – this reduces interference between channels, improves channel separation and often allows better performance at low impedances.

Single push-pull output with Darlington construction : Push-pull reduces distortion at high power levels, while Darlington cascades can deliver high gain and current.

Non-Negative Feedback (non-NFB) circuit : Doing without classic feedback loops often means more naturalness in the signal, especially in terms of dynamics and impulse fidelity, but requires very good components and careful design to keep distortion low.

Safety instructions

Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
Accesories:
1. Use: • Accessories such as adapters, mounts or cleaning utensils must only be used for their intended purpose. Incorrect use can cause damage. 2. Care: • Clean accessories only according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or use in damp environments. 3. Safety: • Ensure accessories are correctly fitted or connected to prevent accidents or malfunctions. 4. Children and pets: • Accessories, especially small parts, pose a choking hazard and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Common instructions for all categories: • Operating instructions: Read the operating instructions carefully before using the product. • Repairs: Do not open or repair the product yourself.
