We think

The Soulnote D-3 is a digital benchmark that demonstrates how close high-end technology can come to musical naturalness. In an age when many DACs are lost in features and marketing, the D-3 offers clarity, precision, and an almost analog feel when reproducing digital music. It sounds neither cold nor clinical—it comes across as vibrant, nuanced, and organic. Those who value music as an experience and want to discover something new in every recording will find the D-3 a partner that not only reproduces details but brings them to life.

Product presentation

The Soulnote D-3 is a high-end D/A converter from Soulnote's Series 3. Its concept is based on a dual-monaural design, with strictly separated digital and analog sections. Inputs are: Zero Link / USB (Type B) (dual) , coaxial (S/PDIF) and AES/EBU , with an external 10 MHz clock input to further reduce jitter. The analog outputs consist of one XLR (balanced) and one RCA (unbalanced) output. The short signal levels are approximately 5.6 Vrms on XLR and 2.8 Vrms on RCA. The frequency response of the D-3 ranges from approximately 2 Hz to 120 kHz at ±1 dB , with a signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 110 dB and a total harmonic distortion (THD) of approximately 0.008% (in NOS mode at 176.4 kHz) . In terms of power consumption, it is around 48 W , the case measures approximately 454 × 174 × 407 mm and it weighs around 28 kg – solid data that indicates high-quality workmanship.

Special features

What makes the Soulnote D-3 remarkable:

Dual mono construction : both channels have their own power supply, their own circuits, their own layout – digital and analog sections are separate.

Zero Link technology (including USB and digital inputs) with external clock input to minimize asynchronous signal processing stages.

Primary passive analog filter type : simple, effective filter solutions that leave the signal unaltered.

NOS mode available: For listeners who want to work without oversampling – this reduces pre- and post-ringing.

High-quality material selection & construction : Naked foil resistors, powerful transformers, solid mechanical components and careful layout design for reduced resonances.

Technology & Materials

The D-3's technology is ambitious throughout: It utilizes four ES9038PRO DAC chips (two per channel), combined with a discrete non-negative feedback (NFB) circuit. The analog output stage utilizes carefully selected resistors and materials to minimize distortion. The cabinet is resonance-optimized, with mechanical measures such as floating bases and decoupled components to reduce vibration influences. Particular attention is paid to the selection of components with high current delivery and low time lag – ensuring that even complex musical layers are reproduced cleanly, transparently, and spatially.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

The Soulnote D-3 is handcrafted in Japan using high-quality, durable components. The craftsmanship and choice of materials are designed for durability: heavy and stable cabinets, high-quality connectors, and the finest components for transformers and filters. Soulnote offers a solid service and spare parts supply – the D-3 is not a short-lived device, but a long-term investment in high-quality digital playback.

Background / History / Development

Soulnote is a Japanese high-end brand founded on the commitment to giving equal importance to technology and music. The Series 3 product line embodies this commitment – digital and analog components are developed with equal care. The D-3 is the digital heart of this series – it demonstrates how Soulnote designs the digital side of music reproduction, focusing on clock quality, signal path simplification, mechanical stability, and material quality.

Basic knowledge

A few key technical points to help you better understand the D-3:

NOS mode stands for "non-oversampling": In this mode, the DAC does not use digital filters that interpolate or oversample the signal. This often results in a more natural reproduction, especially in the impulse response, but also in deviations in the frequency response and noise behavior.

Zero Link is a connection technique that minimizes asynchronous signal processing stages (e.g., different clock circuits), especially when using an external clock. This improves timing, reduces jitter, and can significantly improve the stage and transient response.

Safety instructions

Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
Accesories:
1. Use: • Accessories such as adapters, mounts or cleaning utensils must only be used for their intended purpose. Incorrect use can cause damage. 2. Care: • Clean accessories only according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or use in damp environments. 3. Safety: • Ensure accessories are correctly fitted or connected to prevent accidents or malfunctions. 4. Children and pets: • Accessories, especially small parts, pose a choking hazard and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.

Common instructions for all categories: • Operating instructions: Read the operating instructions carefully before using the product. • Repairs: Do not open or repair the product yourself.
