Luxman LMC-5 MC cartridge
We think
The Luxman LMC-5 is the return of a legend—after more than 40 years without a new MC cartridge, Luxman demonstrates how experience, precision, and attention to detail can create a design that impresses both technically and sonically. Anyone looking for a cartridge that doesn't just measure but brings music to life, especially with a rich midrange, controlled bass, and refined top end, will find the LMC-5 a player that enhances the vinyl experience.
Product presentation
The Luxman LMC-5 is a moving coil (MC) cartridge with low internal resistance (4.7 Ω at 1 kHz) and an output voltage of 0.4 mV at 1 kHz / 3.54 cm/s. It is optimized for a tracking force between 2.1 and 2.3 grams , with 2.2 g recommended. The frequency range is from 10 Hz to about 35 kHz in an ideal environment and setup. The recommended load spectrum is about 40 Ω or more , or about 2.5 to 10 Ω when using a step-up transformer. The dynamic compliance is 8 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne (at 100 Hz). The weight is about 8.5 grams , which is compatible with many common tonearms.
The housing is made of A6063 aluminum , anodized deep red, with an open design to minimize resonance. The stylus is a Shibata profile, particularly suited for precise tracking and detail; the cantilever consists of a thin 0.5 mm diameter aluminum tube.
Special features
Shibata stylus with high tracking accuracy and fine resolution of inner grooves.
Symmetrical coil winding with samarium-cobalt magnet and crossed iron core, which achieves a channel separation of approx. 28 dB and a balanced balance behavior.
Open enclosure with ergonomic shape, reduces reflections and resonances, offers good visibility and easy installation thanks to threaded holes with multiple screw lengths.
Lightweight design with aluminum body and mass optimization that enables tracking that is both stable and smooth.
Technology & Materials
The coils are wound from high-purity copper UEW wire (30 µm) without gold plating, ensuring unadulterated transmission. The unit operates with a samarium-cobalt magnet combined with pure iron in the magnetic circuit for optimized magnetic field guidance.
The cantilever is a conventional aluminum tube; no exotic materials such as boron, ruby, or beryllium were used – this contributes to the naturalness and neutrality of the sound.
Vertical scanning angle is 25° , geometrically exact adjustment is recommended to develop the full potential of the Shibata stylus.
Sustainability & Manufacturing
The LMC-5 is manufactured with a high level of vertical integration. Materials such as aluminum, copper, high-quality magnets, and precise mechanics are durable and carefully crafted. The craftsmanship shows meticulousness in every detail—engraving, finish, and mechanical stability. Spare parts supply and service are part of the Luxman promise, even for such high-priced hardware.

Test reports / press reviews
Hi-Fi World writes:
"I was impressed by the deep, classic mousiness of the LMC-5. The soundstage, transmission, and physicality are commendable right from the start. It shows no signs of excessive treble emphasis, offering a relaxed, smooth reproduction with a rich midrange."
Stereophile judges:
"The LMC-5 impresses with rich sound and pure, detailed, and highly illustrative reproduction, immediately out of the box. The midrange is open, and the upper mid and high frequencies are characterized by fine detail, without harshness. Bass and depth sound harmonious and controlled."
Background / History / Development
Luxman hasn't had a new MC cartridge in its lineup for decades – the LMC-5 marks its comeback. Developed by a team dedicated to uniting sound quality, natural reproduction, and technical precision. Drawing on experience in phono preamplifiers and tonearms, and the brand's reputation, this cartridge was designed to work seamlessly with both classic and modern systems.
Basic knowledge
Moving Coil (MC) Cartridge: With an MC, the coils are movable, which can result in lower moving mass and typically allows for better detail and dynamic response.
Shibata Stylus Profile: A cut that provides a larger contact area with the groove, especially at high frequencies and inner grooves, thus achieving better tracking.
Termination resistance & load: The termination resistance of the phono preamplifier is important for optimal cartridge performance. Too low a resistance can dampen highs, while too high a resistance can affect resolution and balance.
Safety instructions
Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
