We think

The Luxman L-505Z is no ordinary integrated amplifier – it is a prime example of how tradition and modernity can be fused. Luxman, a synonym for Japanese sound culture for almost 100 years, once again proves with this model that amplifiers are not just technical devices, but musical instruments. The L-505Z represents the art of transforming digital measurements into audible pleasure: warm, full-bodied, yet precise, transparent, and full of energy. It is a device that captivates the listener, regardless of genre or volume. In an age when many integrated amplifiers are reduced to pure function, the L-505Z feels like a return to the essence – experiencing music, not just reproducing it.

Product presentation

The Luxman L-505Z is part of the brand-new Z series, which was introduced just in time for the company's 100th anniversary. It marks the entry into this line, which represents a milestone for Luxman: new circuit technologies, redesigned power supplies, and fresh designs – yet still with a clear commitment to the classic Luxman DNA.

With 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 150 watts per channel at 4 ohms, it offers more than enough power to effortlessly drive even larger speakers. It is based on a generously dimensioned 540 VA EI power transformer , which, combined with four custom 10,000 µF filter capacitors, creates a stable foundation. Luxman is deliberately pursuing its own path: Instead of relying on gigantic capacitances, they focus on components with high impulse fidelity and short charging cycles – resulting in fast, controlled sound.

The volume control is handled by the proven LECUA (Luxman Electronically Controlled Ultimate Attenuator) technology . The L-505Z uses the latest version, offering 88 fixed levels. Each volume step is smooth, without jumps or inaccuracies, and the signal quality is fully maintained even at very low levels. Additionally, there's a balance control and traditional tone controls for the treble and bass, which can be completely bypassed if desired using the "Line Straight" function .

Vinyl listeners also get their money's worth: The built-in phono preamplifier supports both MM and MC cartridges. Luxman demonstrates that analog sources are still taken seriously today and don't need to be supplemented by external devices. Combined with high-quality preamplifiers, discrete buffer stages, and balanced XLR inputs, the result is an amplifier capable of processing virtually any source at the highest level.

Special features

The Luxman L-505Z offers a number of special features that make it stand out in its class:

New LIFES feedback technology : Luxman has replaced its long-standing ODNF (Only Distortion Negative Feedback) system with LIFES (Luxman Integrated Feedback Engine System). The goal was to make the sound even more natural without sacrificing the technical advantage of distortion reduction. Version 1.0 of this technology is featured for the first time in the L-505Z.

LECUA Volume Control : The 88-step electronic resistor ladder not only allows for precise volume control but also flawless channel balance. It eliminates the common problem of mechanical potentiometers running erratically at low volumes.

Balanced inputs : In addition to traditional RCA inputs, the L-505Z features XLR connectors. These are rare in hi-fi devices in this price range and demonstrate that Luxman also meets studio-like requirements.

Phono preamplifier for MM and MC : Audiophile vinyl listeners do not need an external phono stage, as Luxman has integrated a discreet and high-quality solution.

Headphone output with 4.4 mm Pentaconn jack : In addition to the classic 6.3 mm jack output, the L-505Z offers a balanced headphone output – a rarity that shows how seriously Luxman takes headphone fans.

Two pairs of speakers : The amplifier can drive two pairs of speakers (A/B circuit).

Classic VU Meter : The iconic Luxman design with illuminated VU pointers has been retained. Combined with the LED volume indicator, it's not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

Technology & Materials

Luxman's attention to detail is evident inside the L-505Z . The amplifier is built in a Class AB push-pull configuration , with carefully selected transistors capable of delivering high current. Parallel-connected bipolar transistors in the output stage deliver not only power but also control—crucial for deep and precise bass reproduction.

The layout follows Luxman's "loop-less chassis" principle: unnecessary ground lines are avoided, signal paths are short, and crosstalk is minimized. The internal cables are made of high-quality OFC copper, manufactured in Japan.

Cooling is provided by massive aluminum heat sinks, which are optimally thermally connected to the power amplifiers. This ensures the amplifier remains stable even under heavy loads. The entire mechanical system—from the transformer to the cabinet—is resonance-optimized. Even the feet are specially designed to minimize vibration.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

Luxman has stood for longevity for decades. The L-505Z is manufactured in Japan with the highest standards of precision. Many components come from specialized Japanese suppliers who have supported Luxman for years. The goal: devices that can run for decades. Spare parts are also available for older models, underscoring the company's sustainability.

The L-505Z's construction also demonstrates responsibility: massive transformers, durable film capacitors, and robust relays. Everything is designed for durability—the amplifier isn't a disposable product, but a device that can last for generations.

Test reports / press reviews

The German magazine i-fidelity.net writes:
"With the L-505Z, Luxman completes the overhaul of its integrated amplifier range. Its sound impresses with its high transparency, very vivid presentation, and dynamic response. Especially in 'Line Straight' mode, it offers a pure, unadulterated sound that immerses the listener deeply in the music."

AREA DVD judges:
"The Luxman L-505Z stereo integrated amplifier is a purely analog device in the classic Luxman design. It sounds fresh and detailed without being overly slender, offering powerful bass and excellent spatial imaging. The build quality is particularly impressive – Luxman has delivered a product that will last forever."

In a brief review, stereoplay magazine praised the "very solid performance, the enormous control even at high levels, and the versatility of the connections." Thus, the L-505Z demonstrates its impressive performance in both technology and musicality.

Background / History / Development

Founded in Osaka in 1925, Luxman is now one of Japan's oldest hi-fi brands. From the very beginning, Luxman focused on sound culture that combined Western classical music with Japanese sensitivity. Products such as the iconic tube amplifiers of the 1950s and the Class-A amplifiers of the 1980s set standards.

The new Z series is part of a comprehensive modernization. Featuring LIFES, LECUA, and redesigned power supplies, it combines the best of past and present. The L-505Z is the entry-level model in this series—which, in typical Luxman style, means uncompromising technology and sound that rivals far more expensive devices.

Basic knowledge

Integrated amplifier : This combines a preamplifier (input selector, volume control, phono section) and a power amplifier in a single unit. This saves space and simplifies cabling.

Class-AB technology : A mix of Class-A and Class-B – it combines the warmth and naturalness of Class-A with the efficiency and power of Class-B.

Negative Feedback (NFB) vs. LIFES : Classic amplifiers use feedback to reduce distortion. Luxman's new LIFES system does this without harshening the sound—the result is precise yet lively.

Phono preamplifier : A phono input is necessary to convert the extremely small signal from a cartridge to line level. The fact that the L-505Z supports both MM and MC systems is a major advantage.
