We think

The Luxman D-03X is a CD player and DAC that sets new standards in its class: deep sound, technically sophisticated, and impressive craftsmanship. A device that doesn't try to impress with hype, but simply convinces with its performance, musicality, and stability. Anyone who still owns a lot of CDs and uses digital sources will find this a device that combines both worlds without compromise.

Product presentation

The Luxman D-03X is part of the NeoClassico/Z series and combines a high-quality CD-only drive with modern DAC functions. It can process CDs, CD-R/RWs, and MQA CDs and offers PCM signals up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD signals up to 11.2 MHz via the USB interface. Optical and coaxial inputs accept PCM signals up to 192 kHz/24-bit .

The cabinet is solidly and sturdily built, featuring a chassis with a thick aluminum front, a protected drive, and additional shielding. The front panel features a fluorescent display with zoom mode , track number, and time, as well as a clearly legible indicator. The output stages offer both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR) analog outputs, as well as optical and coaxial digital outputs.

Special features

MQA support – CDs and digital files with MQA encoding are decoded and displayed in Studio/Authentic modes, giving the player enhanced sound depth and detail.

Dual monaural DACs – a separate Texas Instruments PCM1795 chip per channel, which, together with a high-quality output stage, controls how micro-details and dynamics are beautifully reproduced.

Solid and stable power supply technology – OI-core transformer, large capacities and a loop-free, shielded chassis for maximum stability and low susceptibility to interference.

Drive in a "safe" – the drive is encapsulated under metal, protected from shocks and vibrations. Plastic components have been replaced with aluminum where possible; mechanically high-quality construction with great attention to detail.

Display and operation – Zoom mode for a larger display of track number and time; clearly structured remote control with phase-switchable output phase; dimmable display.

Technology & Materials

The internal wiring utilizes OFC (oxygen-free copper) cables, non-nickel-plated conductor cores, and reliable relays. The analog output stage is designed for low impedance. The digital section operates with precise master clocks to minimize jitter. The drive mechanism and transport are solidly dimensioned: steel or aluminum top plates, a heavy base chassis, and protective structures to prevent resonance.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

The D-03X is solidly constructed with high-quality aluminum parts, excellent mechanics, and durable components. The workmanship and finish are luxurious, and the materials are robust. Spare parts and service are included as standard, ensuring Luxman focuses on long-lasting devices, not short-lived effects.

Test reports / press reviews

Stereo writes:
"Technically sophisticated and sonically a great... While the 'DSD' logo is emblazoned on the front panel, it doesn't play SACDs , but it does accept DSD files via USB. A real special feature is hidden behind a small blue LED with the word 'MQA' written above it..."

Stereo further judges:
"The solidly built Luxman player weighs a good 13 kilograms... powerful power supply... discrete output stage... not a streamer, but requires suitable players via digital inputs."

From the test of Stereo HiFi-Regler it says:
"Sometimes you imagine how someone switching from an older player would react to the sound: The D-03X surprises with a balanced, finely textured, and musical performance . Even with regular CDs, it displays lightness, structure, and transparency."

Background / History / Development

The Luxman D-03X was designed as a modern CD player and DAC to bridge the gap between traditional disc playback and cutting-edge digital formats. It sits within the product line as a pure CD player with modern DAC functionality, without an SACD drive but with digital versatility. Luxman uses proven DAC chips, high-quality power supplies, and mechanical precision to ensure the highest quality even with digital sources.

Basic knowledge

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): A process in which audio data is encoded in such a way that additional information from the master image is retained, often in smaller data formats; used for better playback.

DSD vs. PCM: Two different digital formats. PCM uses fixed sampling rates and word lengths; DSD uses a different technology with very high sampling rates and simple signal processing.

Balanced vs. Unbalanced Output: Balanced output (XLR) offers better signal-to-noise ratios and is more robust against interference; unbalanced output (RCA) is more common and easier to use in a variety of setups.

Safety instructions

Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
