We mean

The Korf Audio TA-SF9R Series II tonearm is a 9-inch tonearm with an interchangeable ceramic headshell that combines technical rigor with audiophile clarity. Where many tonearms rely on conventional bearing and adjustment concepts, the TA-SF9R pursues a mechanical approach that systematically minimizes bearing friction, energy storage in the tube, and resonance triggers. Sonically, it is analytical, precise, and neutral with an open, serene character – not an effects unit, but a tool for clean signal transmission and musical detail.

Product presentation

The Korf Audio TA-SF9R Series II tonearm is a 9-inch tonearm for high-quality turntable systems. It utilizes a horizontal Flexure pivot bearing , which eliminates the need for conventional roller or slide bearings and exhibits virtually no breakaway torque. Vertically, a hybrid ceramic bearing operates with very low friction and high precision. This combination of mechanics aims to keep the arm's mechanical movement as pure as possible.

Unlike the fixed headshell of the TA-SF9, the TA-SF9R features an interchangeable ceramic headshell (HS-A03) . This headshell is an integral part of the system, not just an adapter, and contributes to overall rigidity. Ceramic as a material offers a high resonant frequency and reduces unwanted vibrations in the critical transition area between the tonearm tube and the cartridge.

The tonearm tube itself is made of stainless steel , which, compared to aluminum or titanium, allows for significantly higher flexural rigidity and lower energy storage. The internal wiring is also of high quality, which benefits the purity of the signal path.

Adjustment functions for azimuth, VTA, and skating are clearly structured, with the Series II version featuring more sensitive adjustment mechanisms. Mounting can be achieved via a JIS/Linn base or an SME sliding base, depending on the turntable configuration.

Special features / Features

Interchangeable ceramic headshell – The HS-A03 ceramic headshell provides a rigid, low-resonance connection between the tonearm tube and cartridge. In listening tests, it demonstrated significant advantages in focus, transparency, and detail resolution compared to traditional metal headshells.

Flexure pivot horizontal bearings – Non-contact horizontal guidance without conventional bearing surfaces, no breakaway torque, no friction. This bearing technology contributes to needle guidance control, especially with complex signals.

Hybrid ceramic vertical bearings – Vertical guidance with low friction and high long-term stability, which also promotes fine detail and smooth movement.

Magnetic antiskating – Non-contact skating compensation that balances lateral deflection without introducing mechanical friction into the system.

Stainless steel arm tube – High stiffness and low energy storage in the tube body, improves resonance management and impulse transmission.

Flexible mounting options – choice between JIS or SME sliding base depending on the turntable model.

Technology & Materials

The Flexure pivot bearing technology eliminates contact surfaces in the horizontal bearing, minimizing unwanted mechanical artifacts. Vertical movement is guided by precision ceramic bearings that offer both low starting torque and long-lasting stability. The internal wiring is designed to maximize signal integrity and minimize interference at an early stage. All materials and manufacturing processes are based on functional criteria, not on superficial aesthetics.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

Korf Audio manufactures in small batches with a focus on durability. The mechanical components are designed not only to deliver high precision but also to remain stable for years. Maintenance-free bearings, robust materials, and easy-to-service adjustment elements make the TA-SF9R a product that doesn't react to short-lived trends but is designed for long-term use.

Test reports / Press reviews

In independent listening tests, AnalogPlanet highlights that the TA-SF9R delivers exceptional clarity and detail without coloring the sound "heavy" or "romantic." The presentation is open, clean, and dynamic, with controlled bass and a deep, calm soundstage.

According to Analog reviewers, the arm feels smoother and more fluid compared to classic Jelco tonearms, with less background noise and greater precision in the rendering of instrument spaces and transients.

Background / History / Development

The TA-SF9R was developed based on the observation that many tonearms adhere to established mechanical designs, despite their inherent limitations in friction, bearing guidance, and resonance management. Korf Audio therefore opted for a Flexure pivot system and ceramic as the material for critical connections. The Series II version also features a revised azimuth adjustment and an optimized tonearm shaft to further enhance precision.

Basic knowledge

Flexure bearings
A flexure bearing utilizes the elastic deformation of a solid element instead of rolling or sliding surfaces. This results in virtually no friction or breakaway torque, leading to a mechanically smoother movement.

Effective mass
The effective mass of a tonearm determines its mechanical compatibility with different cartridges. A moderate value allows for a wider range of cartridges without undesirable resonance peaks.

Antiskating
Antiskating counteracts the inward force exerted when playing records. Magnetic solutions work without contact and without additional mechanical friction.

Safety instructions

Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
