Das 1995 veröffentlichte Album „Elixir“ setzte neue Maßstäbe im Contemporary Jazz: Es erreichte Platz 1 der US-Jazz-Charts und hielt sich dort über 90 Wochen – ein außergewöhnlicher Erfolg. In den USA verkaufte sich das Album mehr als 500.000 Mal und wurde von der Recording Industry Association of America mit Gold ausgezeichnet. Ein besonderes Merkmal von „Elixir“ sind die hochkarätigen Gastauftritte internationaler Stars wie Phil Collins, der den Song Why Can't It Wait Till Morning interpretiert, sowie Patti Austin und Peabo Bryson. Ihr Duett des Klassikers The Closer I Get to You – ursprünglich von Roberta Flack und Donny Hathaway – zählt zu den emotionalen Höhepunkten des Albums.
