Billy Cobham ist – und das ist unbestritten – einer der größten Schlagzeuger der letzten Jahrzehnte. Als Mitglied des legendären Mahavishnu Orchestra und durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Miles Davis sowie über seinen unnachahmlichen Spielstil und seine beeindruckenden Live-Performances erlangte der US-amerikanische Musiker hohes Ansehen – auch weit außerhalb der Jazz- und Rockszene. Kurze Zeit nachdem er das Mahavishnu Orchestra verließ, veröffentlichte er sein legendäres Debüt-Album „Spectrum“, welches bis heute zu den wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Jazz-Alben aller Zeiten gehört. Selbst beeinflusst von der Musik des großen Miles Davis, verbindet Cobham Elemente aus dem Jazz mit Rock und Psychedelia. Funkige Grooves und effektvolle Gitarren-Melodien verschmelzen sehr harmonisch miteinander und die wahre Seele des Jazz wird durch Cobhams außergewöhnliche Fähigkeiten am Schlagzeug zum Leben erweckt. „Spectrum“ erreichte weltweit Platz 1 der Jazz-Charts und schaffte es sogar auf Platz 26 der amerikanischen Albumcharts. Cobhams Erstling wurde zu einem wahren Crossover-Phänomen, das extremen Einfluss auf die aufkeimende Funk/Jazz- und Fusion-Bewegung hatte.
„Spectrum“ wurde in den drei Tagen, vom 14. bis 16. Mai 1973, in den Electric Lady Studios in New York City eingespielt und später in den Trident Studios in London neu gemischt. Billy Cobham trat auch als Produzent für seine Billham Cobly Productions auf, Toningenieur war Ken Scott. Noch im gleichen Jahr veröffentlicht, wartet „Spectrum“ mit einer beeindruckenden Liste von Mitwirkenden auf: Darunter der Keyboarder Jan Hammer, der Gitarrist Tommy Bolin, der E-Bassist Lee Sklar und Ray Barretto an den Congas sowie Ron Carter am Bass. Besonders einprägsam sind die Gitarrenriffs von Bolin (Zephyr, James Gang, Deep Purple), der wunderbar mit Cobhams Mahavishnu-Bandkollegen Hammer zusammenspielt.
Im Zuge der „Atlantic 75 Series“ würdigt Analogue Productions dieses Fusion-Meisterwerk mit einer klanglich überragenden Neuauflage, die von Tonmeister-Legende Kevin Gray liebevoll bei Cohearent Audio gemastert wurde: Die Doppel-LP, auf 180-Gramm-Vinyl, beim Branchenprimus Quality Record Pressings (QRP) gepresst und mit 45 U/min geschnitten, kommt in einer luxuriösen Old-Style Tip-On-Klapphülle von Stoughton Printing.
