We think

The EMT JSD VM is a truly unique cartridge in the high-end segment. It's the first cartridge in the world that allows users to customize the resonance characteristics through variable mass inlays —and it also offers the choice of either a copper or silver coil . It combines the tradition of the EMT Jubilee series with a previously unheard-of flexibility: tonal customization not only through the cartridge itself, but also through coil selection and mass configuration. A tool for perfectionists who want to experience music at the highest level.

Product presentation

The EMT JSD VM is part of the exclusive Jubilee Reference series and is a moving coil (MC) cartridge with a host of unique features. Its heart is an MR high-polish diamond on a sapphire cantilever , combined with a gold-plated AlNiCo magnet and a choice of copper coil for warmth, dynamics, and presence, or silver coil for openness, fine detail, and transparent tones. Added to this is Variable Mass technology : three interchangeable inlay bolts made of different materials allow the natural resonance and thus the sound characteristics to be perfectly tuned to the tonearm and system. With a weight of 10–12 g , 1.05 mV output voltage , 12 µm/mN compliance , and a frequency response up to 30 kHz, it is constructed without compromise to reference standards.

Special features

The JSD VM sets new standards in analog technology:
It combines either copper or silver coils with the ability to individually adjust the mass and thus the resonance behavior. This means: For the first time, a cartridge can be optimally adapted to the listener's taste and tonearm through both the coil material and the variable mass . Copper provides body, rhythm, and dynamics – silver opens a stage of clarity, airiness, and fine differentiation. Together with the MR HP diamond , the sapphire cantilever , and the graphite-anodized aluminum housing, the JSD VM becomes a tool that adapts to the listener's needs.

Technology & Materials

The technology of the JSD VM combines everything EMT has stood for for decades: the highest precision, uncompromising musicality, and robustness. The MC generator is available with hand-wound copper or silver coils , each offering a distinctive sonic character. The sapphire cantilever ensures maximum precision, while the MR high-polish diamond extracts the finest details from the grooves. The gold-plated AlNiCo magnet ensures linear field guidance, and the graphite-anodized aluminum housing with variable mass allows the user to individually adjust the cartridge to the drive and their own listening preferences.

Sustainability & Manufacturing

Like all top-of-the-line models, the JSD VM is handcrafted in Switzerland . The focus is on durability, repairability , and sustainability . The variable inlays make it a versatile tool that can grow with your setup. Thanks to short transport routes within Europe and the consistent selection of high-quality materials such as sapphire, aluminum, copper, and silver , it is a sustainable product not only technically but also ecologically.

Test reports / press reviews

The JSD VM is known among experts as "the chameleon among EMT cartridges." The ability to mechanically adjust the resonance frequency —an absolute first—is particularly praised. Experts emphasize that this allows it to be used in completely new contexts: a cartridge that optimally adapts to everything from slim subchassis drives to massive, high-mass turntables. Added to this is the freedom to choose between copper and silver coils —an option rarely found in the high-end sector.

Background / History / Development

EMT's Jubilee series has represented the pinnacle of analog innovation since 2006. The JSD VM was designed as a logical evolution for the most demanding users – with the goal of offering maximum flexibility. The idea: not just a high-end cartridge, but a system that adapts to the individual setup. Developed and manufactured in Switzerland since 2018, it represents the consistent combination of studio heritage, precision, and innovation .

Basic knowledge

Copper is considered classic: it delivers a musical reproduction with rhythmic energy, present dynamics and a solid sound base.
Silver, with its higher conductivity, enables a more open, airy reproduction – with finer detail, a larger soundstage and more detailed transparency.

In the JSD VM, EMT combines this freedom of choice with the ability to fine-tune the resonance characteristics via the Variable Mass inlays . This makes it not just a pickup, but a modular tool for sound design.

Safety instructions

Electronic devices:
1. General Use: • Electronic devices are designed for use in enclosed, dry rooms only. Direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures may impair function. • Avoid proximity to water sources or other liquids. 2. Electrical Safety: • Use only with the specified power source (e.g., 220-240 V AC). An incorrect power source may damage the device or be hazardous. • Never connect the device to overloaded outlets or extension cords. • If there is any visible damage to the power cord or other components, do not operate the device. 3. Operation and Ventilation: • Place the device on a stable, flat surface. Do not block any ventilation slots to prevent overheating. • Ensure sufficient distance from other devices or walls (at least 10 cm) to ensure optimal ventilation. 4. Children and Pets: • Keep the device away from children and pets, especially small parts that could be swallowed.
Speakers:
1. Setup: • Place speakers on a stable and secure surface or use suitable speaker stands. Tipping over may cause injury or damage. • Position speakers so they are not obstructed and optimal sound dispersion is ensured. 2. Environmental Conditions: • Speakers are intended for use in dry, enclosed spaces. Avoid moisture and direct sunlight, which could damage materials or electronics. 3. Connections: • Use only compatible amplifiers and cables that meet the speaker's technical specifications. • Avoid incorrect polarity connections to prevent damage to the speaker or amplifier. 4. Children and Pets: • Speakers are not toys. Make sure they are placed out of reach of children and pets. 5. Care: • Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners or water.
Cable:
1. Use: • Cables are for their intended use only. Use them only with devices that meet the cable's technical specifications. • Ensure that all connections are secure and tight for optimum performance. 2. Handling: • Never pull on the cable to remove it from a device. Always hold the plug firmly. • Do not bend, overstretch, or place excessive strain on the cable. Cables should not run under heavy objects. 3. Children and Pets: • Keep cables away from children and pets as they can be a strangulation or injury hazard. 4. Inspection: • Check cables regularly for visible damage such as breaks, cracks, or frayed ends. Damaged cables must be replaced immediately.
Accesories:
1. Use: • Accessories such as adapters, mounts or cleaning utensils must only be used for their intended purpose. Incorrect use can cause damage. 2. Care: • Clean accessories only according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or use in damp environments. 3. Safety: • Ensure accessories are correctly fitted or connected to prevent accidents or malfunctions. 4. Children and pets: • Accessories, especially small parts, pose a choking hazard and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
