The recordings themselves are, as the participants repeatedly emphasized, remarkably close to the live experience. There's no crystal-clear perfection, as Herbert von Karajan once pushed to excess, but rather real musicians of flesh and blood. And if any further interpretation was needed to liberate Johannes Brahms from the aura of the cumbersome, \"primitively Teutonic\" composer, then this is it: Brahms has rarely been heard sounding so elegant, almost light-footed – it's practically Italian in its richness. Of course, this Brahms recording has its quirks, but Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic simply bring out every facet of the symphonies. And it goes without saying that direct-to-disc technology captures this dynamic range better than any intermediary medium.
